Manchester City have reached an agreement to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez for a massive £125 million deal, which is about $167 million. This deal would match the British transfer record, according to reports on Tuesday.
City have been after Fernandez for several months. The Argentina international is close to moving to the Etihad Stadium on deadline day.
Fernandez’s transfer would match the fee Liverpool paid Newcastle for Sweden striker Alexander Isak last year.
Enzo Maresca worked with Fernandez at Chelsea before taking over at City this season after leaving Stamford Bridge in January.
Maresca wanted to bring in Fernandez after the sale of World Cup winner Rodri to Barcelona. He also needed to replace midfielders Bernardo Silva, Nico Gonzalez, and Tijjani Reijnders who have all left.
The 25-year-old will join England’s Elliot Anderson and Morocco’s Ayyoub Bouaddi in City’s new-look midfield.
Anderson was signed for £116 million from Nottingham Forest, while Bouaddi cost £86 million, making him the most expensive teenager in Premier League history.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso excluded Fernandez from his squad for the last two matches as rumors grew about his move to City.
Fernandez, who joined Chelsea from Benfica for £106 million in 2023, upset the Blues last season by showing interest in moving to Real Madrid. Because of this, he was dropped for two matches.
The controversial star was sent off during Argentina’s World Cup final loss to Spain in July. He also stirred anger among England fans with his celebration after Argentina’s semi-final victory over Thomas Tuchel’s team.
Fernandez has already won the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup during his time at Chelsea.
