Man dies trying to get phone from well in Kano

A 45-year-old man, Yusuf Usman, has died after going into a well turned into a dump in Kwa Town, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State. He was trying to get his mobile phone back when the tragedy happened.

This incident happened on Wednesday. The Kano State Fire Service confirmed it in a statement from their Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi.

The Fire Service received a distress call at about 11:13 a.m. from one of their staff members, Kabiru Tata, who reported the situation. Firefighters from the state headquarters rushed to the scene.

“When they arrived, they found Yusuf Usman trapped inside a well that had become a waste pit. He had gone in to get his mobile phone that fell inside but could not climb out,” the statement said.

The fire service reported that rescue workers managed to pull the victim out of the well, but he was unconscious. “He was later confirmed dead, likely due to lack of oxygen and heat inside the well,” the statement added.

They handed the deceased's body over to the Ward Head of Kwa Town, Alhaji Muktar. The Fire Service said initial investigations showed that the incident happened while Yusuf was trying to retrieve his phone from the well.

In response to this tragedy, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, called on residents to be careful around wells and other tight spaces. He urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to make sure that wells are properly covered and that abandoned wells are filled to avoid such accidents.

The fire chief also warned people against entering wells, pits, or any enclosed areas without proper safety measures or professional help.
