Man killed in Ogun after being mistaken for rival cult member

A man known as Seyi has been killed by suspected cultists who thought he was part of a rival group at Ijako Market, Owode-Ijako, Ogun State.

PUNCH Metro learned that the incident took place on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. This was when the suspected cultists reportedly invaded the market looking for a rival named Dammy.

A police source, who asked to remain anonymous because he was not allowed to speak on the matter, said the attackers shot Seyi.

The source shared, "We got a report that the incident happened just behind the market. Some boys came to the market looking for a certain target. They got to the spot where the boys were, and they shot the victim."

The police source also mentioned that the incident is linked to the drug trade.

"Police have begun investigation into the incident and are working to identify and arrest those responsible," the source added.

Attack Details

Meanwhile, an anti-cultism advocacy group, Naija Confra, said in a post seen by PUNCH Metro on Sunday that the attackers were looking for Dammy before they killed Seyi.

The group claimed that after being shot, Seyi was also attacked with an axe.

It stated, "It was reported that as soon as the NBM attackers arrived, they shouted ‘Aye Axemen’ and called Dammy’s name before someone was killed. People initially thought it was Dammy who had been killed until they saw the body and realized it was Seyi."

When contacted on Sunday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said he was not aware of the incident.

He promised to inquire and get back, but as of the time of writing this report, he had not done so.
