Manchester United wrapped up a tough week with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Leeds on Sunday. This result does not ease the worries surrounding their manager Michael Carrick.
The Red Devils went to Leeds looking for a win after managing just two victories in nine matches this season across all competitions.
The situation at the club worsened during the week when defender Lisandro Martinez criticized the United management after their 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
Martinez, who plays for Argentina, said Carrick, in his first full season at Old Trafford, was left with a weak squad after a poor summer transfer window.
Carrick said on Friday that United had “moved on” from that incident, and Martinez started the game at Elland Road.
Both teams showed great energy at the beginning of the match in Leeds, but there were not many chances to score.
The first shot on target came in the 26th minute. United goalkeeper Senne Lammens made a great save against a header from Nico Elvedi that looked like it would go into the top corner after bouncing off the ground.
Bryan Mbeumo, who played as United’s main striker, missed a chance a minute later. He headed the ball wide after a good cross from Youri Tielemans and then had a weak shot at Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford.
Finally, Mbeumo scored in the 35th minute. Tielemans sent in a low ball from the right, and Mbeumo guided it into the bottom corner for his fourth Premier League goal this season.
Martinez was substituted at halftime, and Noussair Mazraoui from Morocco came on to replace him.
Leeds came back strong after the break and equalized in the 51st minute. Dominic Calvert-Lewin controlled the ball on his chest and scored at full stretch after Tarik Muharemovic headed the ball from a corner.
The home team gained momentum and kept Carrick’s team mostly on the defensive, limiting their chances to quick counter-attacks.
In search of a winning goal, Carrick made attacking changes by bringing on Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha, but neither side could find the net again.
The draw left Manchester United, 20-time champions of England, in 13th place on the table with only one win in their last seven matches. Leeds, on the other hand, are sitting in seventh place.
