Roberto Martinez confirmed on Monday that he is leaving his role as coach after Portugal's exit from the World Cup. Portugal lost 1-0 to Spain in the last-16 match, thanks to a late goal from Mikel Merino. The game took place at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Martinez, who is 52 years old, faced criticism for keeping veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo on the team, regardless of his performance. He had been the coach since 2023. Before taking over Portugal, he managed Belgium and had stints in the UK with Swansea, Wigan, and Everton.
Martinez's exit was expected as his contract was set to end. He said, "It is true that it was my last game with the Portugal national team."
He expressed gratitude, saying, "Thank you to the Portuguese people because it was an incredible period, a pride which I canβt describe."
He added, "All that strength, energy we had from all the fans, from all the Portuguese people was incredible. Thank you for this and I take with me a memory for life."
