Croatia captain Luka Modric has asked Portugal to give Cristiano Ronaldo a proper send-off from international football. He called Ronaldo the greatest player in the history of Portugal.
Modric believes Ronaldo deserves one more chance to end his international career in a fitting way. This is true no matter if Ronaldo decides to retire from the national team.
Fabrizio Romano shared Modric's thoughts on X on Wednesday. He said, “Cristiano is the greatest player in the history of Portugal, and he deserves another farewell and another ending with the national team.”
These comments come as there is uncertainty about Ronaldo’s future with Portugal. Many are questioning how and when the veteran player will wrap up his international career.
Modric expressed his disappointment about the situation. He said it is unfortunate to see Ronaldo going through this in his own country.
“It’s sad to see this happening to Cristiano in his own country,” he said.
The Croatian captain remains hopeful that a solution will be found. He wants Ronaldo to receive the send-off he deserves.
“Still, I think they will find a solution, because Cris deserves, whether he retires or decides not to continue with the national team, to have a great farewell that reflects what he deserves,” Modric said.
“I don’t know exactly what happened, but I hope the situation gets resolved.”
Ronaldo has been a key figure in Portuguese football for nearly twenty years. He is known as the most recognizable footballer from the country.
His international career includes major tournament victories with Portugal. His long career and record-breaking performances make him one of the most influential players in the history of the national team.
Modric, who has played against Ronaldo many times both at club and international levels, believes that Ronaldo's contributions should be recognized properly when his international career comes to a close.
