Netherlands wins group and avoids Brazil in World Cup

The Netherlands defeated Tunisia 3-1 on Thursday to finish top of World Cup Group F. This victory means they will not face Brazil in the next round but will instead play Morocco.

Ronald Koeman’s team took a two-goal lead in rainy Kansas City thanks to poor defending from Tunisia. Ellyes Skhiri accidentally scored an own goal by slicing Denzel Dumfries’ cross into his net. Minutes later, Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey scored from close range.

This seemed to secure the win for the Netherlands. Their fans in orange were enjoying themselves with Mexican waves during the first half at Arrowhead Stadium. Tunisia managed to score in the second half, but the Dutch quickly restored their two-goal lead with a header from Jan Paul van Hecke shortly after the hour mark.

The Netherlands finished their group stage with seven points, edging out Japan for the top spot in Group F. They will face Morocco in the second round in Monterrey on Monday. Japan drew 1-1 with Sweden in Arlington, Texas, securing second place while Sweden also advanced as one of the best third-placed teams.

Coach Koeman urged his team not to look too far ahead. They might face South Africa or co-hosts Canada in the next round. "We need to prepare for Morocco first because it will be a big game," he said. "It’s a good team with a lot of quality and they can score easily. We know that from Dutch football."

Thursday’s match started on time despite a lightning storm that almost caused delays in the American Midwest. Tunisia came close to scoring early when Ismael Gharbi shot over from near the goal. However, this was not a sign of good things to come for them.

Instead, Skhiri put the three-time finalists ahead by turning the ball into his own net just three minutes into the game. Only four minutes later, Brobbey scored his third goal of the tournament after Virgil van Dijk headed the ball across the area following a free-kick by Tijjani Reijnders.

Tunisia struggled but managed to reach half-time without conceding again. They pulled a goal back in the 54th minute when Hazem Mastouri headed in from Hannibal Mejbri’s corner. But any nerves for the Dutch team disappeared quickly when Van Hecke’s header from Reijnders’ corner went in after a deflection.

Tunisia will leave the tournament disappointed after a poor showing, conceding 12 goals in three matches. Veteran French coach Herve Renard was hired last week after Sabri Lamouchi was sacked following a 5-1 loss to Sweden in their opening game in Mexico. But he could not turn things around as Tunisia lost 4-0 to Japan before their defeat to the Netherlands.

The 57-year-old coach gave an honest assessment of Tunisia’s performance. "We were not at the level for this World Cup," he said. "This is clear. There is no discussion. It’s a big tournament with very good teams, especially in this group. It was a very tough group. And now, the federation of Tunisia needs to sit down and analyse everything."
