The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has finished drafting its work. They have officially sent the draft National Policing Bill (2026) and 29 related amendment bills to the Federal Ministry of Justice for review and legislative drafting.

This submission happened on 19 October. It was made to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, following the Working Group’s plan.

The ministry will check to make sure the bills meet legislative standards. They will also ensure the bills do not clash with existing laws.

The Ministry of Justice is expected to send the reviewed bills back to the Working Group by Friday, 30 October. After that, the Working Group will take a final look at the validated bills before sending them to President Bola Tinubu, completing their task.

The draft National Policing Bill aims to set up a legal framework for a dual policing system. This system includes a Federal Police Service and State Police Services.

The Working Group is dedicated to a clear and open process. They want to provide a solid legislative proposal for the President to review and send to the National Assembly.

Work on the National Policing Bill is going on at the same time as the State Houses of Assembly are looking at the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026. This work needs to be finished before the Bill can go to the National Assembly.
