New Police Boss Takes Charge in Anambra

A new Commissioner of Police has taken over in Anambra State. Nnanna Ama began work on Monday after the former commissioner, Ikioye Orutugu, was promoted to assistant inspector general (AIG) and retired.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesman in Anambra, announced this in a statement on Monday in Awka.

Ikenga, who is a police superintendent, said the new commissioner has over 30 years of service in the police force. He is experienced and accomplished.

Before his new role, Mr Ama worked as the commissioner of police for Intelligence and Training at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja. He had also served as deputy commissioner of police in the same office.

Mr Ama is from Ekata in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. He has a B.Sc. in psychology from the University of Jos.

He started his police career as a cadet superintendent of police. He trained at the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State. Over the years, he has held various roles in the police force.

His career includes work in intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations, and strategic command.

Mr Ama has held several key positions, including deputy commissioner of police for General Investigation in Abuja. He was also commanding officer of the number 44 Police Mobile Force (PMF) at Force Headquarters in Abuja and Area Commander in Nnewi, Anambra.

Other roles he has held include assistant commissioner of police for Homicide at the FCID, Zonal CID in Umuahia, commanding officer of number 11 PMF in Calabar, and divisional police officer in Asokoro and Dutse Alhaji in Abuja.

He also worked as a coordinator of courses at the Police Detective College in Enugu, commanding officer of number 26 PMF in Uyo, divisional crime officer in Sango Otta, Ogun State, and police public relations officer for Rivers command.

Mr Ama has taken part in many professional and strategic training programs both in Nigeria and abroad.

Ikenga added that Mr Ama has received recognition for his courage and effectiveness in operations. He has even received a commendation award for bravery and gallantry.

Mr Ama is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Psychological Association, and Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.

The police spokesman quoted Mr Ama as saying he is committed to building on the security progress made in Anambra.

He promised to strengthen cooperation among the police, other security agencies, traditional leaders, community leaders, youths, women, and other important stakeholders.

Mr Ama also pledged that the command would focus on protecting lives and property, preventing and fighting crime, upholding the law, and ensuring safety for all residents, visitors, and businesses in the state.
