Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on Nigerians to stay united and work on building the nation as Nigeria celebrates its 66th Independence Day.
In a message on his X page on Thursday, Governor Sanwo-Olu recognized the challenges Nigeria has faced since it gained independence on October 1, 1960. He also pointed out the significant progress the country has made.
“Since October 1, 1960, our country has faced difficult times and celebrated moments of great progress. Through it all, we have shown resilience and determination,” he said.
The governor expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, believing that with collective effort, the nation can achieve great things.
“I believe deeply in Nigeria and in what we can achieve when we stand together,” he said. He added that the country’s diversity should be seen as a strength, not a reason for division.
Governor Sanwo-Olu urged Nigerians to remember the sacrifices made by those who contributed to the country’s independence and development.
He stressed that building a united country is the responsibility of both the current and future generations. “Nigeria belongs to all of us. Its future will be shaped by the choices we make and the work we are willing to do together,” he said.
Tinubu speaks on economic reforms
President Bola Tinubu, in his Independence Day speech, mentioned that Nigeria has faced economic challenges for decades but is now moving towards prosperity.
He said his administration has made tough economic choices since he took office and claimed these reforms have improved the nation’s economic outlook.
The president noted that the economy grew by more than four percent in 2026, inflation has decreased from its peak, foreign reserves have been rebuilt, and the foreign exchange market has stabilized.
According to the president, the next focus of the government is to turn economic reforms into better living conditions for Nigerians. This includes lowering the cost of living, creating jobs, and expanding opportunities.
“Our priority is to bring down the cost of living. We will achieve this by lowering the cost of producing and moving the things Nigerians consume.
“We have the land and people to feed ourselves. My government is therefore focused on expanding mechanized irrigation and dry-season farming, improving access to seeds and fertilizer, increasing mechanization, and investing in storage and transportation. We are building and completing the roads, railways, and ports that connect farms and factories to markets,” he said.
The president also acknowledged that many Nigerians still struggle with food, education, healthcare, and transportation costs.
He promised that the government would strengthen social support programs while working on long-term measures to reduce poverty. “We cannot erase in four years what accumulated over generations. But we can change its course,” President Tinubu said.
He described this time as a shift from economic reform to prosperity and encouraged Nigerians to keep working together for a better future.
“Let us go forward together, with faith in ourselves, faith in our country, and faith that the sacrifices we have made will yield their reward,” he said.
Mr. Tinubu wished Nigerians a happy Independence Day and urged them to keep believing in the country’s future.
