Nigeria bags 14 medals at Uganda Para Badminton Championship

Nigeria’s Para Badminton team came back from the 2026 Uganda Para Badminton International Championship with 14 medals. They won nine gold and five silver medals. This adds to Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s top teams in para badminton.

The championship took place from Tuesday, July 7 to Sunday, July 12 in Uganda.

Lyka Brown was a key player, winning gold in the WH1 Women’s Singles. She also teamed up with Ijeoma Gift to win gold in the WH1 and WH2 Women’s Doubles. Gift also picked up gold in the WH2 Women’s Singles.

In the men’s wheelchair category, Emmanuel Ohaeri won gold in the WH2 Men’s Singles. He also partnered with Brown to win gold in the WH1 and WH2 Mixed Doubles. Ohaeri teamed up with Ekeoma Samuel to take silver in the WH1 and WH2 Men’s Doubles. Samuel added another silver in the WH1 Men’s Singles and a third silver with Gift in the WH1 and WH2 Mixed Doubles.

Nigeria’s standing category athletes also did well. Obinna Nwosu won gold in the SL3 Men’s Singles, while Eze Chukwuebuka took silver in that same event. They later worked together to win silver in the SL3 and SU5 Men’s Doubles.

Nnanna Chigozie won gold in the SL4 Men’s Singles. He teamed up with Chukwuebuka to win another gold in the SL3 and SU5 Men’s Doubles. Eneojo Agada wrapped up the gold wins with victory in the SU5 Men’s Singles.

Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, said this medal haul boosts the country’s profile for upcoming competitions.

“The para badminton athletes have once again shown that the country can depend on them for winning medals and making us proud. This current board will keep supporting the para athletes and ensure they get all the necessary help,” he said.

Orbih pointed to the Paralympic Games as a major goal. He said, “We want to qualify as many athletes as possible to make a big impact following the achievements of Eniola Bolaji.”

He also thanked the sponsors who helped make this success possible.

“I want to thank the Abia State Government for sponsoring six players. I also appreciate the Bayelsa State Government and Police College Badminton Club Lagos for supporting one player each. The federation is ready to work with them and many others in the future,” he said.
