The President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adeniyi, has praised Team Nigeria for winning the country’s first medal at the Veterans World Wrestling Championships in Amman, Jordan.
Elias Mika, a former national champion, made history as the first Nigerian veteran wrestler to win a medal. He took home the bronze in the 70kg Greco-Roman category.
The championships, organised by United World Wrestling, are happening from October 6 to 11. They include Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling for athletes aged 35 and older.
In a message from the federation’s board, Adeniyi also recognised veteran coach Babatunde James, known as Tunde King, for his guidance of Mika.
“I congratulate Mapsin Elias Mika and Tunde King on this historic feat. This historic achievement is a moment of immense pride for Nigeria and the entire wrestling community,” he said.
Adeniyi added, “Their dedication and passion for wrestling, even after retiring from active competition, show the strong commitment of our veterans to the sport.”
He noted that this medal has put Nigeria’s name in the record books of world veterans wrestling. It has also boosted the country’s growing image in the sport.
Adeniyi mentioned that the experience of former athletes can inspire and guide younger wrestlers.
He shared that the federation has included veteran wrestling in its plans to honour the contributions of past athletes and keep them involved in the sport. He assured veterans that the current board will keep supporting their welfare and participation.
