FTSE Russell has announced that Nigeria's upgrade from Unclassified to Frontier Market status will start on 21 September. This was shared in a market notice on Thursday.

This change means Nigeria is back in the global Frontier Market group. It is a key moment for the country's capital market.

The process began in October 2025 when FTSE Russell put Nigeria on its Watch List for possible reclassification. This was after Nigeria improved its foreign exchange liquidity, capital repatriation, and market access.

In April 2026, FTSE Russell confirmed Nigeria's return to Frontier Market status, effective from 21 September.

Following Nigeria's shift to a T+1 settlement cycle on 1 June, FTSE Russell did another assessment. Market players raised worries that the new settlement system could create a need for prefunding for international investors.

This review included many discussions between NGX Group, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), FTSE Russell, and international market players.

NGX Group said its team spoke directly with global custodians and institutional investors in July. They used this chance to show how the T+1 settlement cycle works. They also answered questions from international investors and custodians and highlighted their plans to keep Nigeria’s market up to date with global best practices.

After the review, FTSE Russell, along with feedback from the FTSE Equity Country Classification Advisory Committee, confirmed that "no material settlement, operational or funding issues had been observed since the implementation of the T+1 settlement cycle." Based on this, the FTSE Russell Index Governance Board confirmed that Nigeria’s change to Frontier Market status will happen as planned on 21 September 2026.

This announcement is part of broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria's capital market. It aims to position it as a key player in investment and economic growth.

On 6 August, the NGX Group Board met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. They updated him on changes and reforms in the Nigerian capital market. They also discussed how the market can attract long-term capital to support Nigeria’s economic growth.

This meeting highlighted the need for ongoing teamwork between the government and capital-market players. This is crucial for creating a good environment for investment and economic growth.

Nigeria's return to Frontier Market status shows that the country is gaining international recognition for its market progress. It also sets the stage for the next phase of development.

Temi Popoola, Group Managing Director/CEO of NGX Group, said, "This is an important moment for Nigeria’s capital market. But the real significance of returning to Frontier Market status is the opportunity it creates for the next phase of our market’s development.

We have to turn greater international visibility into broader participation, deeper liquidity and more capital for Nigerian businesses. Our ambition is to build a market that is increasingly competitive globally and more relevant to Nigeria’s economic growth. We are encouraged by the continued support of the Federal Government and the commitment of stakeholders across the market as we work towards that ambition."

The next step will be the publication of the FTSE Frontier Index Series annual indicative review files for September 2026. These will show Nigeria's new status and will be out on Wednesday, 2 September 2026. The reclassification takes effect on Monday, 21 September 2026.

Nigeria's Frontier Market status is expected to boost the visibility of Nigerian stocks worldwide. It will also create opportunities for more engagement with international investors and increase their involvement in Nigeria's market.

This follows S&P Dow Jones Indices placing Nigeria on its Watch List for possible reclassification to Frontier Market status during its 2027 Country Classification Annual Review. This shows growing global interest in Nigeria’s market improvements.

NGX Group promises to keep working with the Federal Government, SEC, market operators, investors, global index providers, and others. The goal is to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the international financial world and make the capital market more important for economic growth.
