The Nigerian government is worried about the political and security issues in Niger after a failed coup attempt. They are urging all sides to restore constitutional order peacefully.
On Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement saying they are watching closely as events unfold in Niger. They highlighted that stability in Niger is very important for Nigeria and the whole Sahel region.
Reports say a mutiny broke out in Niamey, Niger's capital. People heard heavy gunfire and explosions in various parts of the city, including Diori Hamani International Airport and Air Base 101.
The mutineers tried to storm the fortified presidential palace where the junta leader, Abdourahmane Tchiani, is based with his elite security forces. After several hours of fighting, the elite forces, backed by the Russian-supported African Corps, managed to stop the mutiny.
“The Government of Nigeria views with deep concern the current political and security situation in the Republic of Niger,” the statement said. It was signed by Oluwadamilola Adeniyi, the spokesperson for the ministry.
Nigeria pointed out its long historical, cultural, and friendly ties with Niger. They hope for peace, security, democracy, and development to return to Niger soon.
The government also mentioned that a peaceful and stable Niger would positively affect Nigeria and the surrounding region. This is because both countries share close ties and face similar security challenges.
Nigeria warned against using force to settle political problems. They believe such actions hurt efforts to create lasting peace and stability.
“Any resort to the use of force to settle political differences detracts from this objective,” the statement noted.
The Nigerian government called on the people and leaders of Niger to work together for “an inclusive and participatory return to stability and constitutional order.” They stressed this is important for both Niger and regional peace.
Niger was suspended from ECOWAS after the coup in 2023 that brought Mr. Tchiani to power. Along with the junta-led Mali and Burkina Faso, Niger later withdrew from ECOWAS to form the AES.
Nigeria's response comes even with the diplomatic tensions between the two countries after the coup that removed the elected president, Mohamed Bazoum.
President Bola Tinubu led ECOWAS in condemning the coup, which led to sanctions and a border blockade against the country.
Although the sanctions and blockade have been lifted, the relationship between Nigeria and Niger is still not fully healed.
