The Nigeria Volleyball Federation has praised the National Sports Commission and the Enugu 2026 National Sports Festival Organising Committee for adding volleyball and beach volleyball to the Coal City Games.
The federation sees this move as a boost for volleyball in Nigeria. They believe these events will give athletes chances to compete, discover talent, and gain exposure for upcoming international competitions.
The 23rd National Sports Festival will take place in Enugu from November 27 to December 11. Athletes and officials are expected to arrive on November 25 and 26. The opening ceremony is on November 27, and the closing ceremony will be on December 11.
This will be Enugu's first time hosting the National Sports Festival. It is also only the second time this multi-sport event will be held in the South-East, with Imo State hosting it back in 1998.
In a statement from its Media and Publicity Committee chairman, Godspower Avwerosuoghene Odedede, the NVBF praised NSC chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade for their efforts in including these two sports.
The federation pointed out that the inclusion of beach volleyball is especially important. They believe it can help discover new talents and prepare athletes for international competitions.
The NVBF is calling on state ministries, sports councils, and volleyball associations to start preparing. They want these groups to organize trials and find the best athletes for the Games.
The NVBF stressed that the festival should be more than just a competition. It should also serve as a chance to identify grassroots talent and develop athletes.
They added that having volleyball and beach volleyball in the Games could lead to more investment from states. It can also strengthen local structures and help a new generation of athletes reach the national teams.
