For Nigerian entertainers, moving abroad means more than just changing locations. Ayra Starr is growing her music career internationally. Banky W is focusing on education and ministry. Others have joined the military, nursing, medicine, and business.

In this third part, we look at Ayra Starr, Banky W, Okunnu, and other entertainers who relocated abroad, why they left, and what they are doing now.

If you missed the first and second parts, you can find them here and here.

Ayra Starr

One of the biggest names on the list is Mavin Records singer Sarah “Ayra Starr” Aderibigbe. She announced in November 2025 that she had moved to New York City, United States.

The singer explained that living in the city had always been her dream. She said it feels like home when she performs there, comparing it to Lagos because of its large Nigerian community.

Ayra Starr emphasized that relocating would not make her lose her Nigerian identity or culture. She remains aware of what matters to her.

The singer became popular globally with her 2022 hit “Rush.” Since moving, she has continued to release music, including “Heaven Baby”, “Treat U Right”, and “Tornado.”

Sunkanmi Omobolanle

Yoruba actor and filmmaker Sunkanmi Omobolanle also moved abroad with his family. He later announced that he had become a British citizen.

The actor, son of veteran comedian Sunday “Papi Luwe” Omobolanle, shared the citizenship news on his Instagram.

Before moving, Sunkanmi made a name for himself in the Nigerian film industry as an actor and director. His works include “Gongo Aso”, “Eti Keta”, “Alakada 2”, “Ofeefe (Mirage)”, “Kakanfo”, “Jail”, and “The Alternative.”

He married Abimbola in 2011, and they have a daughter.

Lord of Ajasa

Yoruba rapper Olusegun “Lord of Ajasa” Osaniyi was a well-known figure in Nigeria’s indigenous hip-hop before relocating to the United States. He later became a U.S. citizen.

The rapper gained recognition for delivering much of his music in Yoruba. This helped spread the appeal of indigenous-language rap among Nigerian audiences.

During his career, he worked with famous musicians like 9ice, Olamide, and the late Dagrin. He became popular with “Ma Yi Lo”, released in 2000, and went on to release other songs.

Funsho Adeolu

For veteran actor Funsho Adeolu, moving abroad was mainly about reuniting with his family. Since then, he has spoken about the challenges in the Nigerian film industry while exploring other interests.

Adeolu has also started hosting events, earning the nickname “The Dancing MC” because of his lively performances at social events.

He often shares videos of himself dancing to songs by old musicians on social media. He runs his production company, Fynest Media.

Before moving, Adeolu built a career in Nollywood, appearing in productions like “Heroes and Zeroes”, “The Antique”, “The Tribunal”, “The Perfect Arrangement”, “One Too Many”, and “Slum King.”

Gold acknowledged that losing money in business is tough. But he said he chose to focus on personal growth and move on instead of dwelling on past failures.

His acting credits include “My Regret”, “Arinzo and Gbeje”, and “Nurse Oyinda Dele.” More details about these titles should be confirmed before publication.
