A Nigerian man named Michael Chiedu Nwanze has been sentenced to 13 months in prison in the United Kingdom. This happened after he led police on a high-speed chase in Northampton to avoid being caught.
Nwanze, who is 23 years old, was sentenced by Northampton Crown Court. He admitted to several charges, including dangerous driving, driving without insurance, and failing to stop for police.
According to a statement from Northamptonshire Police, officers tried to stop Nwanze on March 10 because the vehicle he was driving was flagged as uninsured. Instead of stopping, he sped away and drove recklessly through the streets of Northampton before heading onto the A45 towards Wellingborough.
Police reported that Nwanze ignored traffic lights, drove up to 70 miles per hour in 40 mph zones, and exceeded 100 mph on the dual carriageway. His actions put both other drivers and pedestrians in danger.
His escape ended near the Wilby Way roundabout. There, he got stuck in heavy traffic and crashed into several vehicles while trying to get through. Officers then surrounded his car and arrested him at the scene.
Nwanze pleaded guilty in April at Northampton Crown Court and was sentenced in June. The investigating officer, PC Thomas Williams from Northamptonshire Police’s Roads Policing Team, reacted to the case.
Williams called Nwanze's behavior reckless. He said, “Nwanze’s actions that day showed a complete disregard for the safety of other road users and pedestrians.” He added that the young man drove at excessive speeds, ignored traffic signals, and endangered many people while trying to escape.
“Dangerous driving of this nature can have devastating consequences, and it is only by good fortune that nobody was seriously injured as a result of his behaviour that day,” Williams said.
Williams promised that police would keep targeting drivers who break road traffic laws. He said, “We will continue to proactively target those who use our roads illegally and dangerously, and I hope this sentence sends a clear message that this type of offending will not be tolerated.”
This conviction is part of a trend where Nigerian nationals have faced sentencing in UK courts. Recently, Nigerian student Anderson Ishiekwene was jailed for child grooming offences. Anthony Ikenwe and Kevin Nwamma were convicted in a £5 million cryptocurrency fraud scheme. Another Nigerian was sentenced to seven years in prison in Scotland for a domestic stabbing.
