Nigerian wrestlers showed their strength at the Central African Wrestling Championship in Brazzaville, Congo. They came back home with five gold medals and one silver from freestyle, beach, and women’s wrestling events, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The team made a strong start on the first day. Terry Godfrey won gold in the men’s 65kg freestyle category. Andrew Woyinkorikiye followed up with gold in the 53kg women’s wrestling. Precillia Archbone also shone by winning the 45kg event. This gave Nigeria three golds from three matches.
The wrestlers maintained their good performance in beach wrestling. Woyinkorikiye and Archbone both won more gold medals. Godfrey added a silver medal in the same event, completing Nigeria's successful outing.
In the end, Nigeria's team finished as the third-best overall. DR Congo and Congo Brazzaville took the first and second spots due to having more athletes registered in the competition.
President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, who is also the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, said this event is part of a plan to build grassroots talent through international competitions.
“Athletes competing with international peers learn different wrestling styles, tactics, and face tougher physical challenges,” Adeniyi said.
“Athletes enjoy winning. Success in international tournaments motivates the next generation to work hard. It also expands their cultural and social views, gives them exposure to professional scouts, and opens pathways for future success.”
He pointed out that competing internationally benefits more than just the athletes.
“International representation can attract more public and private funding for local sports facilities. This is part of our plan for developing our athletes,” he said.
The Nigerian team in Brazzaville included the three wrestlers, coach Kingkuro Oyinbrakemi Tangi, and federation Assistant Secretary Abigail Ibrahim. Their trip was sponsored by Adeniyi.
