Nigeria’s U-20 men’s handball team will kick off their journey for the African title against two-time champions Algeria. This match is part of the 33rd African Men’s Junior Nations Championship happening in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on Saturday.
The Nigerian team is feeling good after winning the IHF Trophy Africa Zone 3 title in April. They beat Benin Republic 39-29 in the final.
But the continental championship is tougher. Coach Emmanuel David’s squad is in Group B with Algeria, Angola, and Madagascar.
Nigeria’s first match against Algeria will be followed by games against Angola and Madagascar. The young Handball Stars are aiming to reach the knockout stages.
This competition runs from September 5 to 12. It also acts as a qualifier for the 2027 IHF Men’s Junior World Championship. This makes Nigeria’s performance really important.
David has picked 16 players for the championship. The team wants to build on their regional success and finish strong on the continental level.
