The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians about a fake social media post that promotes a supposed free portal for correcting National Identification Number (NIN) records.
This warning was shared in a public advisory on the commission’s X handle on Tuesday.
In the advisory, the commission called the message and links a phishing scheme that aims to steal personal information from unsuspecting Nigerians.
It advised everyone to ignore the post and not to click on any suspicious links that claim to offer free changes to NIN details.
The NIMC stated that all requests for updates or corrections to NIN records should only be done through its official self-service platform found on the NIMC website.
The commission urged citizens to use its verified communication channels for any information about NIN enrolment, changes, and other identity management services.
According to NIMC, the online portal being shared has no link to the commission and should not be trusted.
The commission assured Nigerians that the National Identity Database is secure and protected from unauthorized access.
“We assure citizens that the National Identity Database is secure and fully protected,” NIMC said.
The commission reminded the public to stay alert and avoid engaging with any suspicious online links.
It repeated its commitment to protecting citizens’ identity data and keeping the country’s identity management system trustworthy.
Moreover, it encouraged the public to report any suspicious messages, websites, or activities that falsely claim to be connected to the commission to the right authorities.
