At least nine people lost their lives in a serious road accident involving a Delta Line passenger bus and a gas truck on the Ore/Ijebu-Ode Highway in Ogun State.
The accident happened around 4:55pm on Monday in the Bethel area, under the Ijebu-Ode Unit Command. A white Toyota Hiace bus from Delta Line, with registration number 14B-299DT, collided with a white Sino Truck owned by Bill Gas Solution Ltd, bearing registration number AAB162XD.
Afolabi Odunsi, the Chief Route Commander and Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, shared this information in a statement on Monday.
Odunsi confirmed that all nine people in the two vehicles died at the scene.
"Preliminary investigation identified speed violation as the probable cause of the crash," the statement said.
He added that the crash occurred during rain, making the road slippery.
The FRSC rescue team reached the accident scene at about 4:58pm, just two minutes after getting the emergency call.
The bodies of the victims were taken to the General Hospital morgue in Ijebu-Ode, while both vehicles were towed to the Ilese Police Station by the Ilese Police Motor Traffic Division.
In response to the incident, the FRSC Sector Commander for Ogun State, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged drivers, especially those of commercial vehicles, to be very careful when driving in the rain.
Ogunjobi advised drivers to stick to speed limits, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid reckless driving.
He warned that speeding on wet roads is particularly risky due to less tire grip and poor visibility.
The FRSC expressed condolences to the families of the victims and reminded all road users to prioritize safety at all times.
