The Nigeria Olympic Committee Women Commission will bring together over 100 girls from secondary schools in Lagos State on Saturday, October 10. This event will take place at the OlympAfrica Centre in Amuwo-Odofin. It is part of the celebration for the International Day of the Girl Child.

The event is themed “Her Voice, Her Future: Investing in Girls Through Sports and Education.” It will be a day-long program featuring schoolgirls, young female athletes, coaches, and key players from the sports, education, and advocacy sectors. The program will include talks from women leaders in education and sports, mentorship sessions, sporting activities, and the launch of the “Her Voice” pledge.

NOC president Habu Gumel explained that the goal of this initiative is to promote the rights of young girls. He wants to use sports and education as ways to empower them, develop leadership skills, and help them grow personally. “We believe that when you invest in a girl’s education and empower her through sports, you are not just educating one girl, you are giving her a voice to shape her own future. Our theme ‘Her Voice, Her Future’ is a call to replace child marriage with classrooms and playgrounds where girls can learn, lead, and thrive,” Gumel said.

This event is part of the Commission’s annual program for 2026. It will also include a Women in Sports Leadership Training/Seminar for journalists from October 22 to 24 in Abuja. The organizers said the Lagos program aims to encourage school retention through sports, promote digital technology as a means of empowerment, and challenge negative views about the girl child.

The newly renovated Olympic Sports Complex at Amuwo-Odofin will be lively as girls take part in activities that build confidence, skills, and leadership abilities.
