The Nigeria Premier Football League has set the weekend of August 27 to 29 for the start of the 2026/27 season. This decision came after a meeting with key stakeholders, including the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation, NPFL officials, and club owners in Abuja, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.
The approved football calendar shows that the season will run until May 28, 2027. This plan also includes matches for the President Federation Cup. The goal is to create a better structure for domestic football in Nigeria.
For the 2026/27 season, a new financial chapter begins. Shehu Dikko, the chairman of the National Sports Commission, announced that the league champions will get N1 billion in prize money. This amount is the largest ever for a Nigerian club football winner.
The increased prize money is part of a larger effort to boost the commercial appeal and competitiveness of the NPFL. It aims to draw more investment into Nigerian football.
The new season will also see four clubs promoted from the Nigeria National League. This follows the end of the 2025/26 second-tier season.
Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Ranchers Bees, and Doma United have earned their place in the top flight. They will take the spots of the four clubs that were relegated after the last NPFL season.
These new teams will join the defending champions, Enugu Rangers. They celebrated their ninth league title by finishing at the top of the table in the 2025/26 season.
