The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will start again on 28 August. The opening match is a South-west derby between Shooting Stars and newly promoted Inter Lagos. This announcement came on Friday when the fixtures for the 2026/27 season were released during the league’s Annual General Meeting in Ibadan.
The fixtures show a mix of returning clubs and new teams, along with some exciting matches for the opening weekend. The first game will see five-time champions Shooting Stars play against Inter Lagos. This match will take place at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan on Friday night, 28 August.
Matchday One will continue on Sunday, 30 August. Former title contenders Rivers United will play at home against Plateau United. Doma United will also welcome Sporting Lagos to their ground.
In Ilorin, Kwara United will kick off their season against Kano Pillars at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl Stadium. The Harmony Boys are in Katsina for the Ahlan/Gusau Preseason Tournament. Coach Ashifat Sulyman is using this time to prepare his team for the upcoming season.
In other matches, Barau FC will host Nasarawa United in Kano. Abia Warriors will entertain Kun Khalifat in their opening game. Last season’s fourth-placed team, Ikorodu City, will start at home against returning side Ranchers Bees. Bendel Insurance will face Warri Wolves in a South-South derby.
Rangers will welcome Katsina United in Enugu. Niger Tornadoes will take on former champions Enyimba in Minna. The opening matches will be an early test for many clubs. Fans are hoping their teams can start strongly in what is expected to be another competitive NPFL season.
The opening weekend is crucial as it will set the tone for the 2026/27 campaign. Clubs will begin their quest for domestic titles and a chance to qualify for continental tournaments.
