Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made a strong comeback in competitive football, winning the Man of the Match award. He helped Chippa United secure a goalless draw against Golden Arrows in their first game of the 2026/27 South African Premier Soccer League season on Saturday.
This was Nwabali's first competitive game in eight months. The 30-year-old was impressive at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium. He showed fans and selectors why he is considered one of Africa’s top goalkeepers.
FotMob reported that Nwabali received a 9.1 rating, the highest among all players, after making six crucial saves that helped Chippa United keep a clean sheet.
Nwabali returned to Chippa United last month after leaving the club following Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign in Morocco. Both sides agreed to end his contract by mutual consent.
His return comes after a tough time off the pitch. He has openly discussed his struggles with mental health after losing both parents.
But against Golden Arrows, Nwabali played like the goalkeeper who once helped the Super Eagles win on the continental stage.
Chippa United spent a lot of time defending as Golden Arrows controlled the game and created more chances. Yet, Nwabali was solid and kept his goal safe.
His best moment was just before the hour mark. He made a fantastic double save to stop Ronaldo Van Neel, showing great reflexes and positioning.
Besides his impressive saves, Nwabali also played a big role in organizing Chippa United’s defense. He confidently claimed crosses and reacted quickly to loose balls in the box.
His performance included three high claims, three clearances, and a notable 12 ball recoveries. However, his passing accuracy was 65 percent, an area he will want to improve as the season goes on.
Nwabali first caught attention during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where his skills helped Nigeria reach the final and he became the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper over Francis Uzoho.
He also performed well at the AFCON 2025 in Morocco, where Nigeria secured a record-extending bronze medal.
However, after leaving Chippa United and not having a club, he lost his spot in the national team to Maduka Okoye.
His performance on Saturday could remind Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle that Nwabali is still a strong candidate for the number one goalkeeper position as Nigeria prepares for upcoming international games.
For Chippa United, who barely avoided relegation last season, the draw marks a good start to the new season.
The Chilli Boys will now focus on their next league match against Richards Bay on 11 August. Nwabali will aim to continue his strong return to the field.
