Nigeria’s Ambassador to France, Ayodele Oke, has officially started his job after presenting his Letters of Credence to French President Emmanuel Macron.
Mr Oke handed over his letter to the French President on Monday during a short event at the Élysée Palace, the official home of the French president.
He is now Nigeria’s 17th ambassador to France. Mr Oke is also the latest ambassador to present his letter of credence, marking the start of his duties.
Letters of credence are important documents issued by a country’s leader to confirm the appointment of an ambassador or permanent representative. They officially introduce the ambassador to the receiving authority, which is the French President in this case, and show that the person can speak and act for their country.
According to PREMIUM TIMES, President Bola Tinubu announced new ambassadors last year and approved their assignments in March. This happened two years after he recalled the previous ambassadors without explaining why.
During this time, Nigeria did not have top representatives abroad. They relied on former foreign minister Yusuf Tuggar and the Chargé d’affaires in the embassies.
After the approval of new postings, several ambassadors have started their jobs.
In a statement released after the ceremony, Mr Oke mentioned that his job would focus on boosting relations in security, trade, and investment. He aims to promote Nigeria’s interests, values, and international reputation with “clarity and credibility.”
He also said his wider diplomatic tasks include securing benefits for Nigeria, protecting Nigerian citizens, and enhancing the country’s image in France.
Mr Oke’s appointment places him at the heart of the changing relationship between Nigeria and France. This comes at a time when ties between the two countries are getting stronger.
The ambassador said it “underscored the compelling need to elevate and recalibrate the partnership between Nigeria and France.”
