The fourth Abig Nwankwo Foundation Okija Annual Unity Football Tournament is set to kick off in December. The best three teams will share a prize pool of N10 million, according to the organizers.
This tournament includes all nine villages of Okija in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State. It will begin in the first week of December 2026 and will continue through the festive season.
The final match is planned for Wednesday, January 7, 2027. All games will take place at the Okija Central School Pitch, also known as St. Mary’s Pitch, Umuofo Okija.
The winning team will take home N5 million and gold medals. The second place will win N3 million and silver medals, while the team in third place will receive N2 million and bronze medals. Each of the six other villages will get N200,000.
Chief Chimezie Ken Nwankwo, who is the Chairman of Bigly Group and founder of the Abig Nwankwo Foundation, started this tournament to bring people together, promote peace, and help young people develop.
“This tournament is not just about football; it is about unity. It is about giving our young people a sense of belonging. We aim to provide opportunities for budding football talents in Okija to express themselves, to be discovered, and to stay away from social vices,” Nwankwo stated.
Uwaoma Odili Iheabunike, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, mentioned that they are ready to ensure a fair and memorable tournament. “Okija is one family. Football is our bond,” he added.
The opening ceremony and the final will include music, cultural displays, and guests such as traditional rulers, political leaders, and business figures.
In the 2025 edition, Ubahu emerged as the champion after defeating Ubahumonum with a goal in extra time. Umuhu finished in third place. The winners received N3 million that year.
