Former Super Eagles captain Jay-Jay Okocha has picked Michael Essien and Yaya Touré as the African midfielders he wishes he had played with during his career. This was reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.
Okocha is seen as one of Africa's most skilled players. He believes creative players like him do better when someone helps with the less exciting defensive tasks.
"There are a few players like me who need somebody to do the dirty job for them," Okocha said in an interview with Goal Africa.
He remembered the joy of playing with Sunday Oliseh, the tough Nigerian midfielder known for his hard work and strong tackles. Oliseh often took on the ‘dirty job’ that let Okocha show off his skill and vision for the Super Eagles.
Dream Partners
Looking beyond his teammates, Okocha named two West African legends he would have loved to partner with.
"I would have also loved to play with Michael Essien and Yaya Touré," he said.
Okocha praised Yaya Touré, calling him a complete midfielder. He said Touré was not just good at attacking. He also pressed and did a lot of defensive work, even if he didn’t tackle like Essien or Oliseh.
