Olori Atuwatse Says Olu of Warri Will Stick to One Wife

Olori Atuwatse III, the wife of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has said her husband will not change his mind about polygamy.

The Queen spoke during an exclusive interview with BBC News Pidgin published on 23 September.

She was asked if she would accept her husband taking another wife if he decided to change his mind about polygamy.

Olori Atuwatse said she did not expect the monarch to change his views. “First of all, His Majesty will not change his mind about polygamy, so let us settle that first,” she said.

She added with a laugh, “I alone, one person, I am like three women, so I am fine with that.”

The Queen also mentioned that sharing her husband’s time can be tough because of his many duties as the Olu of Warri.

She said they are learning how to balance the demands of his role, but she added, “I just want him for myself.”

Olori Atuwatse’s comments come months after her husband shared why he prefers not to marry more than one wife.

In January, PREMIUM TIMES reported on Olu’s position, where he explained his reasons for staying married to one woman.

He said being a king already takes a lot of his time, and he does not want to complicate his family life.

“As for marrying many wives, I do not know; God did not give me that grace,” he said.

The monarch also mentioned that he values the peace and stability in his home and wants to be with his family when not on public duties.

Ogiame Atuwatse III and Olori Atuwatse got married in 2014 and have three children.

The Queen’s latest comments come as she talks publicly about the same topic her husband discussed earlier this year, showing she supports his choice to stay in a monogamous marriage.
