The protests in France and other parts of Europe are still going strong. Protesters want action against high living costs, low wages, poor education, and corruption.
From France to Portugal, Albania, and Italy, unrest continues. The protests have seen looting, injuries, and clashes between police and demonstrators.
In Spain and Portugal, people have set up tent camps to protest against high housing costs. Many young people in Europe feel uncertain about their future.
This unrest happens as far-right parties gain more support and win elections. Europe is also facing a tricky situation with its support for Ukraine. This comes as President Donald Trump tries to build relations with President Vladimir Putin of Russia.
In France, the protests come just before the country's election set for April 2027. Right-wing politicians see this chaos as a chance to gain power. Experts say that the mix of protests, rising energy costs, and weak leadership makes it easier for anti-establishment campaigns to grow.
Earlier this week, Maria Le Pen from the far-right National Rally party blamed the looting and violence on “decades of immigration” to France. She claimed her party could bring back order and said President Emmanuel Macron’s leadership has lost all “credibility or authority.”
Le Pen is doing well in recent polls and is seen as a likely next leader. Meanwhile, French authorities have reported over 2,400 arrests across the country. In Lisbon, Portuguese police arrested 55 people.
According to PREMIUM TIMES, the violent protests in France started as a small demonstration at Saint-Exupéry high school in a Paris suburb on September 21. What began as a minor issue quickly turned into widespread unrest across Europe.
President Emmanuel Macron said earlier this week that “nothing justifies” the violence. He stated that “listening to the anger” does not mean that those who vandalized and looted will escape punishment. He also promised to ensure “full transparency” regarding the police's response to the protests.
