Grief and sorrow filled Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, on Thursday after armed robbers shot and killed Lawanson Abiodun. He was a 100-level student in the Department of Arts and Social Science Education.

The school management declared Thursday a lecture-free day to mourn the loss of the student. They also offered condolences to the student body and the family of the deceased.

This information came from a statement released by the university management and signed by Niyi Oduwole, the university's spokesperson.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof Ayodeji Agboola, expressed his sadness over the student’s death. He assured students that the management is working with security agencies to improve safety on and around the campus.

The statement said, “Following the incident of armed robbery in Ago-Iwoye township that resulted in the tragic loss of one of our students early this morning, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, on behalf of the university senate, has directed that today, Thursday, 18th June, 2026, be declared a lecture-free day.

“While commiserating with the entire student body over the demise of their colleague, the university management expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and assures the students that adequate security measures will be put in place in collaboration with relevant security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property.

“Management also appeals to the entire student populace that, in grieving over the untimely death of their colleague, they should exercise restraint and eschew any action that will further aggravate the situation on the ground.

“At this critical period, the university management pledges its support to the students and sympathises with them over their departed colleague.”

The spokesperson for the state police command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident. He stated that the police have started an investigation into the crime.

Babaseyi said, “The police command has commenced an investigation into the tragic death of a student at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, who was shot by suspected armed robbers in Ago-Iwoye.

“Police operatives responded promptly and have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. Investigation is ongoing, while the command commiserates with the family and the OOU community and prays that the deceased’s soul rests in perfect peace.
