A claim on social media says OPay has stopped using customers’ phone numbers as account numbers. It also says the company is now giving out standard bank account numbers. This claim has caused confusion among OPay users.

The post, shared widely online, told OPay customers still using their phone numbers as account numbers to visit OPay agents for updates. “OPay is no longer using phone numbers as account numbers. They’re now issuing standard account numbers, so if you’re still using your phone number as your OPay account number, hurry to an OPay agent to get yours updated,” wrote an X user named Israel Gharee.

But an OPay official, who did not want to be named, told PREMIUM TIMES that this claim is not correct. The official added that OPay would inform customers about any major changes through its official channels.

“I have seen the tweet. But even from the comments, you will see people are already correcting him. If we have any update or news, we will always share through our communication channels,” the official said on Sunday.

What’s Really Happening

The official mentioned that the confusion might come from OPay’s My BizPayment feature. This feature gives users a different account number for business transactions.

This feature is for current OPay users who wish to use their accounts for business. It allows them to enter details about their business and receive a merchant account number after completing the process.

Having a merchant account number does not mean that OPay has stopped using phone numbers for regular customers. The business account number is linked to the user’s existing OPay account and is meant for business transactions only.

My BizPayment is a feature in the OPay app. It has been around for some time and is not a new update.

Users can find it in the “Me” section of the app. They will need to provide details about their business, like what the business does and how it operates.

The process includes various business types and working models. Once users provide the needed information, they can create a merchant account number. This new account number may look different from the usual phone-number format used for regular OPay accounts.
