Super Falcons defender Osinachi Ohale has officially retired from international football. She made this announcement at the age of 34 after representing Nigeria for 16 years.
Ohale shared the emotional news on Friday through a farewell message on her Instagram page. This marks the end of a remarkable journey where she earned 86 caps, played in four FIFA Women’s World Cups, and participated in seven Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Her decision comes after Nigeria did not qualify for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup. Ohale was part of the Super Falcons squad in the recent qualification campaign.
Walking away from the national team was tough for her. She said, "There are moments in life when words are simply not enough. Today is one of those moments."
"After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey, representing my country, and giving everything I had to the beautiful game, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football."
86 Caps, Four World Cups and Seven WAFCON Appearances
Ohale made her senior debut in 2010 and was a consistent part of the Super Falcons. She played under different coaches and with many generations of Nigerian players.
Her international career includes four FIFA Women’s World Cups: 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023. She also participated in seven WAFCON tournaments.
Ohale leaves the national team as a five-time African champion. She was part of Nigeria’s winning teams in 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024.
The 2024 WAFCON was held in Morocco in July 2025 after a delay. Nigeria reclaimed the title by beating Morocco 3-2 in the final.
Ohale was part of that match and contributed significantly to Nigeria’s victory by scoring in the final. This added another memorable moment to her already successful career.
Australia 2023 Remains One of Her Biggest Moments
One of Ohale’s standout performances came at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Nigeria faced co-hosts Australia and won 3-2, with Ohale scoring the second goal.
This match was crucial as Nigeria advanced from a tough group to the knockout stage.
But for Ohale, it’s not just about goals and trophies. She said, "I have stood on the biggest stages in the world, representing Nigeria at four FIFA Women’s World Cups and seven WAFCON, and I am incredibly proud that we lifted the African title five times."
She added, "But beyond the numbers and trophies are the memories that will stay with me forever. The tears, the celebrations, the difficult moments, the victories, the defeats, the friendships, the sacrifices, and every time I stood proudly with my hand over my heart and heard the Nigerian anthem."
‘I Would Choose Nigeria Every Single Time’
Ohale’s farewell message was filled with gratitude. She looked back at her journey from a young player to one of Nigeria’s most experienced defenders.
She reflected on her sacrifices while wearing the national team jersey. "I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears, and my heart. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria every single time."
She also thanked everyone who supported her journey, including her teammates, coaches, family, friends, and the Nigeria Football Federation.
She said, "To my teammates, coaches, staff, family, friends, Nigeria Football Federation, and everyone who walked this journey with me, thank you. You became part of a chapter of my life that I will treasure forever."
Ohale also expressed her appreciation to the Nigerian fans. "To the Nigerian fans: thank you for believing in us, supporting us, celebrating with us, and standing by us through every high and every low. Your love made wearing this jersey even more special."
‘The Jersey Will Leave My Shoulders, But Never My Heart’
Ohale’s international career ends with an impressive record: 86 caps, four World Cups, seven WAFCON appearances, and five African titles.
As she reflected on her achievements, she stated that her biggest pride was representing Nigeria. "Today, I say goodbye to international football with no regrets, only gratitude."
"86 caps, 16 years, 4 World Cups, 7 WAFCON, 5 WAFCON titles. But the greatest achievement of all is knowing that I had the privilege to serve my country."
She ended her farewell with a heartfelt message. "The jersey will leave my shoulders, but it will never leave my heart. Thank you, Nigeria, for allowing me to live my dream."
A Career That Continues Beyond the Super Falcons
Though Ohale is stepping away from international football, she will continue her club career. The 34-year-old currently plays for Pachuca in Mexico. She has also played in the United States, Sweden, and Spain, including a stint with Alavés.
Her retirement from the national team marks the end of a significant era for Nigeria. From her first match in 2010 to her last years as a senior player, Ohale contributed to five African title-winning teams.
She leaves international football with a record of 86 appearances, five WAFCON medals, and four World Cup experiences. Most importantly, she leaves with the gratitude of a player who dedicated 16 years to the Nigerian jersey.
