Parents accuse teachers of extortion and absence at Nasarawa nomadic school

Parents in Wuro Auta, Gitata area of Karu Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, have accused teachers at the Wuro Nomadic School of being absent and demanding money.

The parents, part of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), said there are not enough teachers at the school, which serves over 200 children from various Fulani settlements nearby.

The PTA chairman, Saleh Isah, claimed that the head teacher, who started in March, has not shown up at the school since his appointment.

Mr Isah said instead of coming to the school, the head teacher has called him several times to ask for money. "He will call and ask me to send him money, which I refused because he has never come to teach our children," he said.

Mr Isah pointed out that the school was built by the community, but the government has not provided enough learning materials or teachers.

He mentioned that things got worse after the last teacher was moved, and the new one has not reported for work. "Since the last teacher was transferred, the present one has refused to come. No government officials have come despite several complaints to the authorities in the Panda Development Area," Mr Isah said.

In response to these claims, the area supervisor, Joseph Auta, said he would look into the matter and ensure it is properly investigated.

Mr Auta also called on Governor Abdullahi Sule to hire more teachers for schools in the area, which are facing serious shortages.

Kande Adamu, the Governor's Special Assistant on Nomadic Education, also spoke on the issue. She stated that the state government would bring in the teachers involved in the complaints and investigate the situation.

Mrs Adamu assured that anyone found guilty would face punishment. She added that Governor Sule's administration is dedicated to making sure everyone has access to education.

She also mentioned that the government is working to improve the quality of education in nomadic communities across Nasarawa State.
