The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faced another setback on Wednesday in the House of Representatives. Aliyu Misau, who represents the Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency in Bauchi State, has officially joined the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Mr Misau shared his resignation in a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen. The letter was read during the plenary session on Wednesday.
In the letter, Misau said his decision came due to the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP. He believes this crisis has made it hard for him to represent his constituents and contribute to their development.
He wrote, βI would like to thank the PDP for the opportunity given to me to serve the good people of Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency. The leadership crisis in the PDP has made it impossible for me to continue to represent my people and contribute to the development of the constituency.β
His move seems connected to the larger political changes happening in Bauchi State. This follows Governor Bala Mohammed's recent switch from the PDP to the APM. Since this change, many political office holders and party supporters in the state have also left or shown interest in leaving the PDP.
This situation puts more pressure on the PDP in the House of Representatives. The party has been losing members due to ongoing internal disagreements and factional disputes.
These internal issues have caused a wave of defections among elected officials and key party members. This raises doubts about the partyβs ability to stay united as future elections approach.
With Misau's defection, the APM strengthens its position in Bauchi State. The party is gaining more politicians and elected representatives who were once part of the PDP.
