The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced it will not take part in the local government area election in Edo, set for Saturday.

The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) says it has approved 12 political parties to participate in the election.

On Thursday, the Edo chapter of the PDP revealed that it will boycott the election. They claim the process is based on illegality and breaches of the constitution.

In a statement from its Chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, the party said it will not present candidates or take part in the election.

Mr Aziegbemi pointed out that the election follows the dissolution of elected local government chairmen, vice-chairmen, and councillors. They were replaced by caretaker committees, which goes against Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution.

He also criticized the state for removing the previous EDSIEC management before their tenure ended.

The PDP chairman further accused the state of ignoring eight High Court rulings related to the election.

"A process founded on constitutional violations cannot produce a legitimate democratic outcome. We will not legitimise illegality.

“The Edo PDP will not field candidates or participate in the 11 July 2026 local government election," the chairman emphasized.

He urged party leaders, members, and supporters throughout the state to avoid taking part in the election. He insisted that the party will continue to seek lawful and constitutional ways to uphold democracy and the rule of law.
