Peter Obi and Donald Duke Attend Amaechi's Mother's Vigil Mass

Presidential candidates Peter Obi from the Nigeria Democratic Congress and Donald Duke from the Peoples Redemption Party joined former Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State for a memorial vigil Mass for his late mother, Mary Orduah-Amaechi, in Port Harcourt on Friday.

The Mass took place at Corpus Christi Cathedral of the Catholic Church in Port Harcourt. This was ahead of the burial of Mrs Amaechi, who passed away at the age of 89.

Rotimi Amaechi, who was the Minister of Transportation, is the African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate for the upcoming 2027 election.

Other notable guests at the Mass, which was streamed live on Facebook, included former Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and Dumo Lulu-Briggs, the governorship candidate of the NDC in Rivers State.

Titi Abubakar, wife of ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, and others had arrived in Port Harcourt earlier for the burial.

Amaechi’s Mother Died at 89

Mrs Amaechi passed away peacefully on Thursday, 16 July, as stated by her son’s media office.

Her family described her as a devout Christian who dedicated her life to her family, community, and God.

They also mentioned that the late matriarch was a respected community and Christian leader known for her kindness, warmth, and support for those around her.

After her death, the family thanked friends, supporters, and well-wishers for their condolences and prayers.

Mrs Amaechi will be laid to rest on Saturday at Ubima, their ancestral home in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The vigil on Friday brought together political figures from different opposition parties, including Mr Obi and Mr Duke, along with associates of Mr Amaechi and the ADC presidential candidate.

Mr Amaechi served as the speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007 and was governor of the state for two terms from 2007 to 2015. He later worked as the transportation minister from 2015 to 2023.
