Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has told Nigerians backing his political movement that he is ready to make the ultimate sacrifice to change the country. He urged them not to be scared as the 2027 elections approach.
Mr Obi made this statement on Thursday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, during a town hall meeting. He encouraged supporters to be active in the electoral process and ensure their votes are counted, according to Channels TV.
The former governor of Anambra State said that ensuring credible elections is not just the job of politicians or electoral officials. He insisted that citizens must defend their votes.
His comments come as political activities ramp up ahead of the 2027 general elections. Opposition parties are working hard to mobilize voters.
‘Defend Your Votes’
Mr Obi told the crowd that they must resist any attempts to manipulate the electoral process by staying engaged. He said his supporters should not be afraid of threats or intimidation. The goal should be to make sure Nigerians’ choices at the polls are respected.
“I’m equally ready to die,” Mr Obi said. This was in response to a supporter who had shown willingness to sacrifice for the cause.
He stated he was ready to stand with Nigerians who want to make sure their votes count. He believes political change needs citizens to be actively involved in campaigns and elections instead of being passive observers.
Mr Obi also expressed confidence that any attempts to manipulate the 2027 elections would face stronger pushback. He did not detail the specific types of manipulation he expects.
Obi Links Poor Governance to Nigeria’s Problems
The NDC candidate used this opportunity to connect Nigeria’s economic and infrastructure issues to what he called failures in leadership. He argued that problems in key sectors cannot be solved without addressing the quality of political leadership in charge of policymaking and governance.
Mr Obi pointed to Nigeria’s refinery problems as an example. He argued that the state of key infrastructure shows broader failures in governance.
He urged Nigerians to view the 2027 election as a chance to demand accountability and shape the country’s future through their votes.
This event in Port Harcourt is part of Mr Obi’s town hall series, where he interacts directly with Nigerians ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Channels Television reported that the session included questions from attendees and discussions on the country’s political, economic, and security issues.
