The Plateau State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned a bill in the Plateau State House of Assembly that seeks to give life pensions to state lawmakers.

In a statement released on Wednesday by its Publicity Secretary, Choji Felix, the party called the proposed law “self-serving.” They argued that it would add more financial pressure on the state during tough economic and security times.

The PDP claimed that the bill, which is in front of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-dominated House of Assembly, is more about securing lifelong financial benefits for lawmakers instead of addressing the needs of the people.

The party pointed out that the proposal comes at a bad time, considering the security issues and economic struggles in Plateau State. They warned that it could take away public money from important sectors like infrastructure and education.

“The mandate given to lawmakers is to legislate for the common good, not to create state-funded wealth for themselves at the expense of the people,” the statement said.

The PDP cautioned that if the bill passes, it could set a worrying trend by allowing public office to be used for personal gain.

The party then called on members of the House of Assembly to drop the bill immediately. They also urged civil society groups, labor unions, and other advocacy organizations to rally public opposition through peaceful and legal actions. They encouraged citizens to talk to their representatives and insist they vote against the bill.

The opposition party further asked Plateau State residents to stay alert and resist any move that could harm the careful management of public funds.

The PDP promised to use all legal and democratic methods to stop the bill from becoming law.

As of the time of this report, the Plateau State House of Assembly had not responded to the PDP’s claims.
