The police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested three people suspected of armed robbery and cult activities in the state.
Timfon John, who is the Public Relations Officer for the command, announced this in a statement in Uyo on Tuesday.
Ms John, a deputy superintendent of police, said one suspect was caught during a search in Ikot Ayankana, located in the Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.
She added that this suspect is being investigated for cult activities, assault, malicious damage, and threats to life.
“During the search, operatives found one locally made pistol and one machete hidden at the location.
“The suspect is now in custody along with the recovered items for further investigation,” she noted.
The police spokesperson mentioned that two other suspects were caught during a routine stop-and-search operation in Etinan.
Ms John explained that these suspects were riding an unregistered QLINK motorcycle and tried to avoid the search.
“Their strange behavior led the team to pursue them. They were successfully caught and arrested.
“After a detailed search, one locally made pistol, one live cartridge, and one Android phone were found with them,” she said.
She revealed that during questioning, the suspects admitted to stealing the QLINK motorcycle from Afaha Nsit in the Nsit Ibom Local Government Area.
The suspects also confessed to being part of a four-member armed robbery gang, she added.
She mentioned that efforts are ongoing to catch the other members of the gang and to uncover more crimes linked to the group.
Ms John urged the public to stay alert and share timely and accurate information with the police.
“Community partnership is key in the fight against crime,” she said.
