Police arrest two men over ₦39m bank theft in Borno

The Borno State Police have arrested two men for stealing ₦39.2 million from a bank customer's account in Maiduguri.

The police also recovered ₦10.08 million from the suspects during their investigation.

On Monday, Police Public Relations Officer Nahum Daso released a statement. He said they got a complaint on April 17, 2026. Unknown people had accessed a customer’s bank account in the Bolori area of Maiduguri and withdrew ₦39,208,000.

The statement said, "The case followed a complaint received on 17 April 2026, at about 1:00 p.m., unknown individuals unlawfully gained access to the complainant’s bank account and fraudulently withdrew the sum of ₦39,208,000."

The police reported that their Crack Squad quickly started an investigation. They used intelligence and digital forensic methods to track the suspects.

This effort led to the arrest of Ibrahim Alhaji Gaji, 23, and Umar Mohammed, also known as Baba Alhaji, 39, on June 27, 2026.

The police said, "During the operation, the sum of ₦10,080,000 was recovered from the suspects."

They mentioned that they are still working to recover the remaining money and to catch other people involved in the crime.

"Investigation is ongoing, with sustained efforts aimed at recovering the outstanding balance and apprehending other individuals connected to the crime. The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation," the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, said the command is serious about fighting cybercrime and financial fraud.

He also urged the public to safeguard their banking details. He advised them to report any suspicious financial activities or cyber issues to the nearest police station.
