Two babies have been confirmed dead in Anambra State. Their parents left them in a drainage in Okpoko, a community in Ogbaru Local Government Area.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson in Anambra State, said police found the twins in the drainage on Sunday.
Mr Ikenga, who is a superintendent of police, explained that police acted on a report made to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters on Sunday, 21 June. The report said two lifeless babies were abandoned in the area.
“Following the report, operatives immediately swung into action, secured the scene, gathered vital evidence, and commenced investigations,” he said.
Mr Ikenga confirmed that the parents of the twins have been arrested. However, he did not mention their names.
“The preliminary investigation led to the identification and arrest of the biological parents of the infants, who are currently in police custody and assisting investigators in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident,” he said.
The spokesperson did not say if the parents were married or not.
Mr Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has called this case “a disturbing case of man’s inhumanity to man and a gross violation of the sanctity of human life.”
While condemning the act, Mr Orutugu noted that every child deserves protection, care, and the chance to live.
The commissioner emphasized that the police in the state will ensure that anyone found guilty in this case will face the law.
“Investigation into the matter is ongoing, and further developments will be communicated in due course,” he assured.
