Police Deny Speaker's Claim of Attack, Arrest 300 at Politician's Home

The Nigeria Police Force says it cannot confirm the claim by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, that armed men attacked his home on Saturday morning.

Police spokesperson, Anietie Iniedu, shared this information while responding to questions about the speaker’s warning that his house was under attack around 6 a.m. on the day of the governorship election.

Mr Iniedu said police quickly responded to the complaint. They sent officers to the speaker’s house but found no proof to back up the claim.

"We’ve gotten that complaint and mobilised the police complaint unit. The DPO of that division was directed to go to that location, and we could not confirm that allegation at the residence of the speaker. So far, we cannot confirm that," he stated.

Police Action at Political Stakeholder's Home

The police spokesperson added that officers carried out a different operation at the home of a political figure. During this action, they arrested hundreds of people.

"However, we’ve also made arrests at a political stakeholder’s residence, where we located 300 unaccounted-for persons," Mr Iniedu said.

He did not reveal the name of the political figure or give more details about those arrested or the reasons behind the operation.

Calm in Osun

Mr Iniedu emphasized that the security situation in Osun is calm despite the early morning claim.

"So far, Osun is peaceful, and we encourage residents to come out en masse to exercise their franchise," he mentioned.

This police statement comes as security is tight across the state with voters heading to the polls to choose a new governor.

Officials have repeatedly assured residents of good security. They are urging people to take part peacefully in the election and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
