Police Fire Three Officers Over Killing of UNIPORT Graduate

The Rivers State Police Command has sacked three officers linked to the death of a University of Port Harcourt graduate, Anthony Obodo. This incident happened along Ada George in Port Harcourt last Thursday.

The police also said an inspector from the team, who ran away after the shooting, is now a deserter.

The State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, shared this news while presenting the three officers to reporters in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

Reports say a police team stopped Anthony Obodo at Ada George near Agip junction last Thursday. One officer, Corporal Alfred Louis, fired three shots at Anthony after claiming he refused to stop, which led to his death.

Adepoju explained that the three officers faced an orderly room trial. After the investigation, it was clear the officers were responsible.

CP Adepoju said, "I am here to provide updates on some serious incidents recently recorded in the state. This includes the investigation into the death of Anthony A. Obodo, a student, after a police chase and shooting. It also involves the arrest of suspected robbers in Port Harcourt and its surroundings."

He added, "Let me state clearly that the Rivers State Police Command values professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights. We will protect lives and property."

The Commissioner continued, "When there are allegations of misconduct or crime against police officers, we will not protect anyone who breaks the law under my command. The patrol team chased after the suspect.

"During the chase, Corporal Alfred Louis, part of the patrol team, fired at the vehicle. A bullet hit Anthony A. Obodo, injuring him."

He said they took the victim to Palmer’s Hospital in Port Harcourt. Unfortunately, the doctor confirmed him dead on arrival.

The police quickly arrested the three officers and held them at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Port Harcourt. A detailed investigation took place. Efforts were made to find Inspector Solomon Nwrogu, who reportedly ran away after the shooting.

Adepoju said, "After the investigation, it was clear the officers were responsible for the death of Anthony A. Obodo. I understand the worries of his family and the public."

He confirmed that the police took the necessary disciplinary actions against the officers involved. The officers being shown today have been fired from the Nigeria Police Force and will face court charges.

The Commissioner said this disciplinary action shows that under his leadership, the command will not tolerate misconduct, abuse of power, or law violations by police officers.

Adepoju reassured that the command is dedicated to professionalism, accountability, transparency, and service to the public.
