The Enugu State Police have arrested five people in three different operations for allegedly vandalising and stealing public property.
In a statement on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, said the stolen items include a solar street light, road traffic signs, and materials from the Enugu State Water Corporation.
Ndukwe reported that on September 27, 2026, around 8:30 pm, police received a tip-off. Two men, Wisdom Nuhu and Moses Jonathan, were found trying to sell a suspected stolen solar street light at a scrap yard in New Artisan Market, Enugu.
Police from the New Haven Division quickly went to the scene and arrested the two men, recovering the solar street light.
"During questioning, the suspects admitted to vandalising and stealing the solar street light earlier that day at Graceland Estate, Independence Layout, Enugu," he said.
More Arrests
On September 24, 2026, at about 3:34 am, officers from the Abakaliki Road Police Division, following an alert from the Enugu State Command and Control Centre, arrested Chukwudi Nwigbo, a 35-year-old man, along Abakaliki Road, GRA, Enugu.
"The suspect and another person, who escaped, were caught on surveillance cameras while taking down road traffic signs. Many damaged road signs with different messages were found with the suspect," Ndukwe said.
In another case on September 15, 2026, members of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit, working with the Neighbourhood Watch Group, arrested two men, Zubairu Hamanpedimso, 31, and Mohamed Adamu, 21. They were accused of planning to vandalise and steal materials from the water corporation.
The police recovered a bag containing iron materials, bolts, and nuts that were allegedly taken from the corporation.
Ndukwe stated that all the arrested suspects have been taken to court and are now in custody while police continue to search for others involved who are still free.
