The Ogun State Police have arrested a 30-year-old man named Idris Obarayi for suspected cult activities. They also found a locally made pistol and a live cartridge after reports of gunfire in Abeokuta, the state capital.
Obarayi was caught at his hideout in Ita Ogboni, Igbore, Abeokuta, around 5:45 PM on Tuesday. This information came from a statement released on Wednesday by the police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
Babaseyi said that the police acted after they received a distress call at about 2:30 AM on October 20, 2026. The call reported gunfire and screams in the Oke Ago-Owu area.
The police quickly mobilized to the scene, which made the suspects run away. During the chase, they recovered the gun and ammunition. Through tracking and investigation, they arrested Obarayi at his hideout later that same day.
Initial investigations show that Obarayi allegedly confessed to being a member of the Aiye confraternity. He also claimed the items found belonged to him. The police are still working to catch the other suspects and fully understand what happened.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, praised the SWAT team for their quick response and follow-up. He confirmed that the police are committed to active policing and quickly catching criminals.
Ojajuni assured the public that reliable information will always be taken seriously. He also said that efforts to find and catch the other suspects will continue.
He urged residents to go about their daily lives and report any suspicious activities through the right police channels. The Commissioner promised that the police would remain vigilant in protecting lives and property in Ogun State.
