The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man suspected of being a gun-runner. They found two AK-47 rifles, three magazines, and 42 rounds of live ammunition in a commercial vehicle in Ilorin.
The suspect, named Umaru M., was caught during a stop-and-search operation by police officers along the Alapa-Okolowo route in the state capital.
The police said they discovered the guns and ammunition inside a bag in the vehicle.
In a statement released on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, mentioned that Umaru first denied owning the bag with the weapons. However, after more questioning, he allegedly admitted to carrying the firearms and ammunition.
The police also said that Umaru provided information linking the weapons to another suspect in a gun-running group called Dan Yarubawa.
"Dan Yarubawa allegedly gave him the firearms for onward delivery to another person, Dahiru, outside Kwara State," the statement said.
The police are now working harder to arrest the other people connected to this investigation. They want to find out more about the suspected gun-running network.
This recovery happened during the police command's effort to focus on intelligence-led and proactive operations to stop crime in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, reacted to the operation. He said the command is dedicated to ensuring safety for everyone in Kwara.
Adekimi encouraged residents to share timely and reliable information with the police to help with security efforts. He assured the public that the police would keep watching and acting against any threats to safety in the state.
