The Nasarawa State Police say they stopped a kidnap attempt and rescued four victims during an operation by officers from the Andaha Division in Akwanga Local Government Area.

This information came from a statement shared with journalists in Lafia, the state capital, on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel.

The incident happened on July 21, 2026, around 9:40 p.m. A distress call reported that suspected kidnappers were active near Megona Filling Station, Andaha, along the Akwanga-Jos Road.

The Divisional Police Officer quickly gathered a team and went to the scene.

"When they saw the police, the armed men opened fire on the officers, which started a gunfight. But the police responded with better firepower, forcing the criminals to leave their victims and escape into the nearby bush with various injuries," he explained.

The four kidnapped victims were found unharmed. Police also recovered several items believed to have been stolen from a nearby store.

The Commissioner of Police for Nasarawa State, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, praised the bravery and swift action of the officers. He called the rescue a sign of the command's strong commitment to protecting lives and property.

The commissioner has ordered a thorough search for the escaping suspects and directed that all operational and intelligence resources be used to ensure they are caught and brought to justice.

The police spokesperson added that the ongoing operation involves the military, local vigilante groups, and hunters. They are conducting continuous searches in the bush to capture the suspects.

"The command urges the public to stay alert and continue giving timely and reliable information to help security agencies fight crime across the state," he concluded.
