The Enugu State Police have identified the woman allegedly killed by her boyfriend, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, as 27-year-old Chinyere Rosemary Ugwu.
The police said Ugwu graduated in Medical Laboratory Science from the Institute of Management and Technology, IMT, in Enugu. She had just finished her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
This update was shared by the police on Friday.
In a statement, they said, "Investigation has established the identity of the deceased as Chinyere Rosemary Ugwu, aged 27, a graduate of Medical Laboratory Science from the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), who recently concluded her NYSC."
The police also mentioned that they had identified and interviewed Ugwu’s family during their ongoing investigation.
"Her parents and siblings have also been identified and interviewed by the Commissioner of Police, alongside the suspect,” they added.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa assured the family that justice will be served in this case.
"The CP has reassured the family that justice will be served in the case," the police statement said.
The 30-year-old suspect was arrested after the alleged killing of Ugwu at his home in the Olympic Layout area of Enugu.
Earlier reports indicated that preliminary investigations showed Emmanuel allegedly killed his girlfriend after an argument about how she got a Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection.
The police claimed that the suspect hit Ugwu on the head with a pestle, leading to her death. He then wrapped her body in nylon and locked her inside the toilet of his apartment.
The decomposing body was found after neighbors noticed a bad smell. They forced the door open and caught the suspect before the police arrived.
The remains were taken to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy. The suspect was saved from an angry mob and re-arrested by police from the Awkunanaw Division.
In a recent update, the police advised the public, especially women, to be careful in their relationships and to make sure trusted people know their whereabouts.
"Once again, be careful about who you go out with. Ladies, especially, let someone you trust know your whereabouts," the statement said.
The police added, "Do not assume that because you know someone, you are necessarily safe with them. People can change."
They further urged everyone to stay cautious, saying, "Above all, stay vigilant, trust your instincts, and do all you can to avoid getting involved with the wrong person."
