The Oyo State Police have rescued a one-month-old baby girl. Her mother allegedly sold her for N2m to someone named Folawewo in Ido Local Government Area.
DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the state's Police Public Relations Officer, shared this news in a statement on Saturday in Ibadan.
Ayanlade said the owner of a health facility helped sell the baby after her mother gave birth there.
A woman named Mary Amos reported the case to the police on Thursday around 6pm. She told them that her 23-year-old daughter had a baby girl on September 6 at Ebepraise Health Centre in Ido.
Mary said her daughter went missing with the baby about seven days after giving birth. She couldn’t explain where the child was, which made Mary suspect that the baby might have been sold.
After getting the report, police officers arrested the baby's mother for questioning. During the questioning, she admitted that the health facility owner and a person named Oludunni tricked her into the deal and helped sell the baby to Folawewo.
Ayanlade explained that investigations showed the baby's mother received N1m out of the N2m, while the health facility owner and Oludunni allegedly got N500,000 each.
The baby girl has been rescued, and the police are working to catch Folawewo and others involved in the case.
Ayanlade emphasized the police's commitment to protecting children and vulnerable people. He also asked the public to report any suspected cases of child trafficking and related crimes.
